(November 13, 2014) YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio –On Friday, postal workers will gather in front the Covelli Centre at noon to send a message to the Postmaster General and USPS Board of Governors.
The Youngstown postal center is slated to close July 2015, and local operations would be handled in Cleveland, saving $7-million a year, according to the the postal service. The Youngstown facility is one of 82 Mail Processing & Distribution Centers across the U.S. scheduled to close.
Closing the Youngstown postal sorting center will cost local jobs and hurt local businesses according to a study commissioned by the postal workers union.
Postal workers say that savings carries a heavy price. Besides the loss of 261 local jobs, the study commissioned by the postal workers estimates total business losses in the Youngstown area would amount to $2.3 million a year.
