Postal customer in Hingham, Mass. goes on racist rant after a Black letter carrier refused to take back a certified letter she had signed. The Postal customer later slapped the letter carrier. The letter carrier had secretly videotaped the entire episode on his cell phone and uploaded it to Youtube.
This woman is outrageous — I am still waiting for US Postal Inspection Service to investigate this matter. it has been a year since postmaster fired me for this racist lady, and Hingham court let her go free, no trial.

If the carrier would have 1) given back her card(s) and 2) took back cerfified letter that she had signed for and said it wasn’t hers, afterwards writing refused on front, then I think the carrier would have been able to keep his job.
With the lack of respect and possible continual harrasment, disrespect, ectera, who knows what the carrier was thinking, feeling understandably. Yes, I can see why he might have not wanted to help her more than he knew he could because she was apparantely hostile to him to a good degree, how many times, how often who knows. I would grieve this and fight this if I were the carrier if it is not too late and try to get reinstated. If he was a te or a casual, then he is s word out of luck. Good luck to him. 🙂
The problem with putting anything online, you cannot take it back. MAybe the carrier want to take it back, but once he felt that way, it was a done deal. With a press of a button, it was gone, out of his hands, on the internet sent for ever, sent put online forever. Facebook doesn’t have a customer service care number that anyone can talk to. Face book sucks because no matter what the issue, you cannot get through to anyone there and talk to them. Facebook doesn’t care. USPS is obviously looking for any reason to get rid of whomever they want. The lady obviously was a b word at that and bias, disrespectful, had intitlement issues that she was better than him and that it was okay to treat the carrier like the words she said about him. Her actions spoke louder than words. Why didn’t usps back up carrier, employee and decide not to deliver mail to the lady as punishment, to let customer know what they did was wrong and they were not putting up with it and taking a stand to back up their employees.
The carrier should have called 911 & or Supervisor to get some one to file a report and or have lady taken away. The phone recording should have been used only as evidence, not for facebook. Lady is obviously has mental problems/issues. The guy tape recording should have been more careful about leaking tape out because the employer may be able to do whatever they want, anybody’a guess and being that post office is federal government that is definately the case. I feel sorry for the carrier at the same time, he should have just taken the letter back, especially if her signature was scanned into his scanner that automatically goes online. If the lady is racist, then she is totally stupid and in her own little world. Yikes!!!!

White racism is based upon the presumption that the ‘white’ race is superior to other races, and/or has the right to rule over whatever they claim.
Blacks who don’t like whites do not feel they have the right to rule over them. Many are basing their dislike and mistrust on centuries of bad behavior from whites. It is more a mistrust than dislike, as blacks are historically known to accept other races.
This woman’s racist rant shows what I’m saying. “Blacks have lower IQ’s, yada yada yada.”
Regardless of if the carrier took her letter back or not, there is no excuse for her verbally and physically assaulting this man. I feel they have history…which is why she felt safe to attack him expecting no retaliation. She has probably slandered him before with him being respectful in reply.
I don’t care how brave you are, most racist white women are not going to physically attack a black man unless there is someone there to help her. This woman felt safe doing it. She knew this guys character.
At the very least, this woman should be charged with intemidation and assault.
It’s sad, but had because I see sexism and racism in how this was handled. Let’s say the customer had been a black man and the carrier a white woman, and the story played out just as it did in this video.

The mail carrier should have taken the letter back, but that was not going to stop this insane woman. She was not going to remove her arm from the vehicle. He should have called his supervisor and put it off on someone with more authority. I am a mail carrier and was verbally abused by a customer one time. She was upset because I would not let her sign for a “resticted delivery” certified letter that was addressed to her husband. I called my station manager & let him deal with her. That is why he makes the big bucks. After he was slapped he should have called 911. Today, you do not know who is carrying a gun. He could have been killed.
I just want to point out that if this was a black woman yelling racial slurs to a white postal worker this situation would have been handle differently. The woman would have been arrested and charges would have been filed leading to a conviction. I understand that he could have taken the mail back, she could have returned it. Instead she went on a racist rant that lead to her assaulting someone. All I know is if that had been a black/latino/asian person then “our legal system” would have “served justice” which we know has always played favoritism with race….

If you don’t know what this means it says that not only do you have to dislike the person of the other race, but you need to be in a position to effect negatively affect that race.

Michael, you are allowed to record anyone as long at they are out in public view. He was on a public street which make him well in his rights to record her at the vehicle’s window. He was not on her property so he had ever right to record her.
I can’t believe the silly justification for this old racist b%tches actions. She signed for a certified letter & once she realized that is was a damn bill she wanted give it back which is absolute bullsh&t! Even if he should’ve taken it back, he did not have to give her the slip back. The bottomline is that this woman was totally in the wrong for the way that she acted and for this man to have been fired for this just shows how quickly an employer will fire “certain people” when a complaint about them is made by “certain people.” And how about the courts not doing anything to this woman?? She assaulted him physically so she should’ve been arrested & placed in jail until she bailed out just.
I think that now that this story is or will soon be national news federal charges will be brought against his lady because the guy was a federal worker who was assaulted while on duty. And he’ll get back pay plus more for being wrongfully terminated. This is wrong, just plain wrong!!
You gotta admit!! That was one funny ass, crazy, out of her mind lady and i would love to have to deliver to her just to see what she’s going to say next!!!! I would of let her do her thing then gave her the letter back, while laughing my ass off of course. If they refuse it’s just like signing for it, no difference to the courts. An attempt to contact was made. If your one of those people who thinks rascism is gone, your lying to yourself, wake up. It never went away. Just do your best to keep the peace with the rase’s that your not and live your life. That carrier was probably a TE, not trained and just sent on the road to figure it out for himself. Something was bound to happen to him, management likes it when craft does things wrong, it gives them something to do beside sitting on there ass’s all day.
I have been in this same situation many times in my 23 years as a letter carrier.
Customer changes his/her mind…I take the letter back and tear up the 3849, scan letter refused, mark it refused, and story is over. Sure, she is a nut and a frigging big time racist, but if the stupid carrier had done the smart thing it wouldnt have gone there. He deserves a smack for being dumb.
This is funny and sad. First of all, if the mailman did or did not take the letter back, did he deserve to be slapped? If that is the case, slap the sales clerk who will not take a return without a receipt. Geesh, I can not believe many folks don’t see the issue with this woman, but focusing on the fact that the mailman should have taken the letter back. He was trying to explain why he could not take it back, but she was not hearing it. She has issues and she should have charges pressed against her.
The Post office should have put a stop delivery at the woman’s address after this incident and made her go to the post office to rant and and rave for her mail and see how far that would go!
The woman is a nightmare! Who cares if the letter carrier should have given her back the letter. Her remarks were horrible to this man! If ANYONE finds that her actions were in order, you frighten me with your ignorance.
I would have taken the letter back, endorsed it as refused, let her keep the peach puppy that she signed and the return receipt. When I returned to the office I would take a return receipt from the counter, filled it out, taped it to the back of the letter and endorsed that as refused also.
No explanations, no name calling, just say fine, take what you signed and let me have the letter to take back to the station.

From the statement, I am assuming that the letter carrier pressed charges but nothing was done. I read in another post that MA has a law about video recording but I am not sure if it is true…basically you must have permission so maybe he could not prove that the incident happened because the video was not allowed in the hearing.
I have worked in customer service for a long time, and handling an escalated situation requires discretion depending on the situation and persons involved. If she was at the truck, it was escalated. So I am guessing that she a difficult customer, so he should have made sure that she understood what she was signing. Of course, most people do not want a collection letter; most workers do not want to deal with this situation.
After she approached the truck, he should have re-explained it (1,2,3), even if he had to get out of the truck again. If it escalated from there, he could have given her the option of putting the letter back in the mailbox, giving him the chance to talk to his supervisors and quelling the hot situation (it might have broken rules but it seems that she is out there!).
But of course, some things do not work out that way. She had followed him, and was berating him before he started to record. He trade to calm her down but she exploded with hatred—and if I was him, I would have just left.

How can there possibly be an argument over this video? This woman clearly has no idea anyone other than the mailman will hear and see this. This is the worst kind of racism, lying underneath and waiting to attack the first black she knows won’t defend himself. Wanna know a secret? If you don’t pay your bills, your invoice gets turned over to collection. The agency in charge of collecting your faulty debt then sends you notices to let you know that you’re about to go into legal action. If you sign for a letter, even if you don’t open it, even if it’s addressed to your husband and you sign in his stead, then you’ve received the letter and sending it back won’t change the collection agency’s idea that you’ve been legally and properly warned that you’re getting sued for the amount of the bill, plus court costs and the money it took the collection agency to send those $11 certified letters. If you know you’re a deadbeat and the postal worker is standing there with a certified letter for your husband, you can tell the postal worker that the addressee is not at home. The carrier will leave a card saying either you can retrieve the letter or they’ll make another attempt at a later time. You can duck that, too. Just don’t answer the door for the postman.
Seriously. In the world of coulda-shoulda-woulda, the postal carrier could have negotiated permission to tape her. “How would you feel if the whole world saw what you are doing and saying to me?” he could have innocently asked, to which she would certainly have said, “I don’t care, F*ck the world, I’m in the right and everybody who saw it would know you’re nothing but a **** **** **** gg*** piece of ****.” And he would have been in the clear. The reason he was fired is because his state doesn’t allow audio to be recorded without one party’s permission.
He was patient and diplomatic. I hope that this video spurs a hundred job offers for him; his quality of tact in dealing with the worst of the worst speaks volumes for his character and would be an asset to ANY business where one must deal with a high volume of customers. He deserves his job back with hazardous duty pay! I will hope that this is resolved for him. Perhaps, with the new media attention, the USPS will review his case and reinstate him? I know, a thousand carriers just groaned, “Don’t hold your breath.”

By watching these video clips one can see that this poor lady was set-up by the mail carrier.He had the cell phone cam. on (as if he knew what ‘s going to happen), the way he talked on the video( good acting BTW),and these clips was edited,and POSTED on Utube (putting customer’s live in danger).

i was a window clerk most abusive job in the world. the people think you work for them and you had better do what they say. they scream they pay our salaries but would never scream that at the docotors office. the carrier should have took the letter back gave it to the postmaster and let him deal with it. the carrier must have had problems out of this lady before that is why he had his cell phone ready. when i get a cert i always ask who is it from before i sign for it. once you sign for it you are on the hook and she knew that someone was suing her for something. there are alot of nut jobs out there and it’s just not worth it. i would never work with the public too many problems. poor guy he thought he had a leg to stand on and come to find out the customer is in charge and what you were taught to do means nothing.

This mail man did nothing wrong.He tried to explain to her and she was holding him there with her arm in the LLV.What do you want him to do?Just speed away and hurt her.Management instructs me and my fellow carriers to inform the customer to sign and if they dont sign right refuse on the letter and scan it as such.Once the letter goes Back to where it came from its considered received by the customer.If the customer refuses it m ost likey they know what it is or whats it about and were notified.If they sign it we dont take it back no matter what.They are to go to the station near the end of the day and talk to the manager,thats is what we are told.
By the way in my neck of the woods this happens all the time(Cleveland) but its usually black people chasing down white carriers and threating to shoot us if we dont take a cert back(usually court cert) or if the dont get “their” check its oour fault and they threaten to cal the police or kill us becuase we suposedly stole “their” check.

There’s no reason that he shouldn’t have taken the letter back. She can still refuse it after she signed for it. Dropping in a collection box or handing it back to a carrier are basically the same thing. Actually, if something is refused it’s better to just turn it back over to your carrier rather than dumping it in a collection box. I can’t believe how uninformed and untrained some of our postal workers are. With that said, he should have calied 911 long before she slapped him. I don’t see how he got fired for this, but it should have never got to this point in the first place. Take it back and say, “have a nice day lady”. What the hell difference does it make to him?

I worked at a cable call center for 4 years and you wouldn’t believe the racist, offensive, and moronic things I was called by the people on the other line. I was just doing my job and I feel that this man was as well.
